The Facebook settlement is about a $725 million settlement by Meta due to some privacy violations. Hence, if you have been using Facebook for the last 16 years, you can claim for privacy violations and get a share in the settlement.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, agreed to offer the settlement after receiving multiple lawsuits by users who claimed that the tech giant improperly shared their information with third parties.

Finally, we will also share with you details about how much you can expect to get from the Facebook settlement. Hence, to learn more, read on through to the end of the article.

What Is The Facebook Settlement?

According to the Washington Post, “Five years after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, millions of Facebook users may be able to get money back from the social media company for their troubles. Facebook, which is owned by Meta, reached a $725 million class-action settlement earlier this year over claims it shared users’ data without their consent. Millions of people can fill out a claim form to get a slice of the settlement amount.

However, if you want to get a share of the settlement amount from Meta, you need to apply for the settlement before 25 August 2023 (the date is over now). To get any money from Facebook, you will need to submit a claim. If you do not submit a claim, you will obviously get no payment. Furthermore, you will also not be able to file a lawsuit against Facebook on your own.

If you want to file a claim, you will just need to fill out a simple form which you will get on this website. If you are a user of Facebook, you must have received a notification on your Facebook account, both through the website and the app. That notification also links to the official settlement page of Facebook. There are instructions available on what to do as well.

Are You Eligible For The Facebook Privacy Settlement?

According to CBSNews.com, “the agreement means that U.S. residents who used Facebook between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, can file an online monetary claim as long as they do so before Friday, August 25, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time. People who send in a claim via U.S. mail must have their letter postmarked by August 25.

Once you go to the website to file your claim for the Facebook settlement money, you will have to provide your confirmation code and claim ID, which you will get in a confirmation email. You will get this mail once you have initially filed for the claim.

However, depending on the settlement, as well as your situation, there can be different requirements for the claim. You would need to have been directly impacted by the problems addressed by the settlement if you want to be eligible for the compensation. Hence, according to the rules, you must have suffered some sort of loss or damage due to the problem. Otherwise, you cannot file a claim in the settlement.

How To Check Your Facebook Settlement Status?

You can track your Facebook settlement in various ways. However, in most cases, you will need to visit a dedicated website or a specific web portal given by the administrator of the settlement. Here are the steps you will need to follow to check your Facebook settlement status:

1st Step: Visit the official website of Facebook Settlement.

2nd Step: Log in using the information that is available to you during the application process.

3rd Step: Go to the ‘Check Status’ section on the website, and click the button.

4th Step: Enter the required details in the section. Here, you will need to provide your claim number or the unique identifier number.

5th Step: Submit your request to check your settlement status.

Once you have followed the aforementioned steps, you will get information about the current status of your Facebook settlement. You must also keep in mind that the processing time of the settlement can vary based on the settlement’s complexity and the number of claims that the website processed. Hence, we recommend you remain patient and check your settlement status periodically.

How Much You Will Get From The Facebook Settlement?

According to the Forbes Advisor, “Each claimant will receive approximately $30 on average. The payout amount is based on the number of valid claims that were filed. U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria said the amount was lower than expected but is clearly a result of the unprecedented number of claims filed. While it’s estimated that each person who submitted a valid claim will receive $30, payment amounts may vary depending on a few factors.

The settlement amounted to $725 million, of which the biggest payout will go out as legal fees for the lawyers who fought against Facebook’s privacy violations. They can claim up to 25% of the payout. Since there are eight plaintiffs in this case, each of them would get up to $15,000. The residual amount will be divided among the various Facebook users who filed their claims.

Wrapping Up

If you do not think that you received any privacy violations, you need to worry about this settlement. 25 August 2023 was the last day to claim for the settlement. Facebook notified people through Facebook notifications in their accounts regarding the settlement so that they could decide whether to participate in the settlement or not.

However, the administrator of the claim settlement also alerted people about requests that asked for their personal information, such as their Social Security Number. Facebook will never ask for this information. Hence, it is important not to give away information. Do you have any more information to add? Share your info with us in the comments section below.
