These systems are further divided into three major categories: Surface Drainage, Subsurface Drainage, and Cross Drainage.

1. Surface Drainage System

This system is responsible for removing water from the visible areas of the road, namely the road surface and shoulders.

It aims to quickly remove rainwater through the road’s camber (cross-slope) and, afterwards, guide it into the collecting structures.

This helps in preventing infiltration that would otherwise weaken the road base. Some of the most common components in surface drainage are:

  • Open ditches: These are unadorned, unshielded channels that run alongside the road and collect water.
  • Side drains: Channels that go along with the carriageway.
  • Catch basins and inlets: Structures that are made for gathering the surface runoff and directing it to an underground piping network.
  • Closed drains: Pipelines with grills as their covers.

2. Subsurface Drainage System

The subsurface system is activated when water from above ground saturates the soil beneath the pavement layers, or when the groundwater level rises.

With the help of modern urban engineering, it saves the pavement’s foundation by draining the excess moisture from the subgrade.

This is the layer beneath the road, keeping the other layers dry and stable. This is especially vital in places that are frequently waterlogged. 

To control the water table, key components are placed underneath the ground:

  • Subsurface pipes: Usually perforated and covered with granular material in trenches to capture and transport water.
  • Longitudinal drains: Pipes that are laid parallel to the road’s alignment. Interceptor drains: These collect and divert groundwater before it reaches the road’s foundation. 

3. Cross Drainage System

    Cross drainage is designed to handle situations where the road crosses rivers, creeks, or canals.

    The installation of such structures ensures that water flows through without interfering with road traffic or destabilising the road.

    The types of structures used are mainly determined by water volume and local ground features, and they are as follows:

    • Box culverts: Rectangular conduits usually for small streams.
    • Bridges: Minor as well as major structures over the largest water bodies.
    • Aqueducts and siphons: Specialised constructions to lead water channels either over or under the road.
    • Causeways: Raised road constructions over low ground or small water crossings that might be underwater during floods. 

    Importance Of A Road Drainage System

    Road drainage systems are a fundamental infrastructure component that offer significant benefits in environmental protection, improved safety, financial savings, and damage prevention.
