Viennese coffee culture

In Vienna, a coffeehouse is not simply a place where one grabs a cup of coffee. I mean, the locals cannot even imagine someone walking in haste while getting ready to go touring around Vienna!

Then, what is it about? What is the essence of Viennese coffee culture? It’s not a hurry. But it’s a place that has been acknowledged as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Here, time has its own pace. Additionally, this is a place that saw some of the best literature created.

In addition, what I personally like most about Vienna is the political debates about revolution.

Also, we cannot forget that this is where some of the best love stories came alive.

It is in this relaxed environment that many first dates among locals take place. Interestingly, a classic Austrian dating scenario almost always begins right here, over a cup of Melange and a slice of cake.

It is a neutral territory that encourages long conversations, perfectly echoing the philosophy of SoulMatcher, which also prioritizes deep communication and psychological compatibility rather than haste.

What Is The Viennese Coffee Culture Etiquette And The “Living Room” Atmosphere?

Do you know how I felt right after stepping into Café Central? Or maybe Landtmann? If you ask me, I am sure I will be able to be so articulate about it.

Let’s start with something I have never felt much of all over the world. And I did travel a lot! You immediately feel a special air of elegance.

I was just blown over by looking at the clean and polished marble tables, let’s start there!

Then you have all these Viennese chairs and newspapers on wooden holders. Additionally, you will see waiters in tuxedos (Herr Ober).

And, I feel like all of these come together to create the perfect setting for relaxation. Yes, relaxation and style might just be the tagline for Viennese coffee culture!

Now, I have a confession. Rather, let’s just say I have a very friendly disclaimer. I love working in coffee shops, and I am an avid Starbucks visitor.

So, I was kind of expecting the same vibe over here. However, you should not expect the bustling service you find in Starbucks.

The main rule of a Viennese coffeehouse is simple. Let’s say you have ordered a single cup of coffee, right?

And you have this feeling that you don’t want anything else, but want to spend a long time here? Good news is that, here,m after ordering one cup of coffee, you have every right to sit at your table all day long.

What To Order: A Brief Coffee Lover’s Glossary

The menu in a Viennese coffeehouse can confuse even an experienced traveler. To avoid looking like a tourist who simply orders “coffee” (a concept that does not exist here), remember these names:

• Melange

I will, of course, start with the king of Viennese coffee. So, this one is quite similar to a cappuccino. But you will get it with milder coffee.

Additionally, this one has more foam. So, if you are not a fan of foam, this disclaimer might come in handy. Although I loved it!

• Einspänner

This is one of the most suitable for all corporate people, but in a chilled-out mood. Firstly, you will get some strong black coffee.

It is served in a glass. Additionally, along with the coffee, you will get a massive dollop of whipped cream on top.

• Verlängerter

This one is a little too simple, but very comforting. It’s a small espresso diluted with hot water. I think this one is perfect for those who prefer a lighter taste.

• Fiaker

Okay, beware! This one is a drink for the brave. It consists of strong coffee with rum or cognac and whipped cream.

A glass of cool water will always be served with your drink. By the way, good manners suggest drinking the water before the coffee.

This will help you to cleanse your palate. Additionally, I suggest that you also drink some water after.

This is another necessary step to refresh your mouth. The waiter will regularly refill your glass even if you finished your coffee long ago.

This is a very beautiful gesture of hospitality.

What Is The Role Of The Sweet Temptations In Viennese Coffee Culture?

Coffee in Vienna does not exist without desserts. The display cases of pastry shops resemble jewelry boutiques.

Additionally, here, every cake is a work of art. I kinda have to warn you about refusing something sweet here.

Don’t do it! It is a true crime against gastronomy.

  • Sachertorte, the world-famous dense chocolate cake with apricot jam. Invented right here in Vienna.
  • Apfelstrudel, thin layers of dough filled with tart apples, raisins, and cinnamon, served warm.
  • Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy shredded pancake served with plum compote. The favorite of Emperor Franz Joseph.

At the same time, every coffeehouse has its own signature dessert, the recipe of which is kept strictly secret.

For example, at Café Demel, you should definitely try the candied violets loved by Empress Sisi.

Where To Find The Best Viennese Coffee Culture Impressions?

Okay, so now that I havemade it quite evident how magical this whole experience is, let’s help you out a little with the places tongo.

You see, Vienna is huge, and there are simply a multitude of great establishments to choose from. Still, if you want to breathe the spirit of history, start with the “golden classics.”

Additionally, these establishments have been tested through the years. Also, they have reached millions of people worldwide.

  • Café Sacher for the original cake experience in an opulent setting,
  • Cafe Sperl has a true 19th-century ambience off the beaten path.
  • Café Hawelka is famous for its bohemian spirit and its legendary pastries called Buchteln, which resemble sweet rolls.

Allow yourself the luxury of being in the present, tasting the flavor of being alive. Because, after all, the way to understand the soul of the city is through being immersed in the coffee culture that Austria’s capital has to offer.
